[DARYL] draws its moniker from the 1980s film centered on an android child known as the Data Analyzing Robotic Youth Lifeform, and the Dallas, TX, ensemble is poised to attract devotees of new wave alongside movies such as War Games and Electric Dreams. Updating the polished electro-grooves of the Cars, the Police, and Echo & the Bunnymen with added traces of Joy Division, the quintet shares the Faint’s energetic approach while inviting comparisons to New York City’s standout act Interpol.

Formed in 1999, the group—Dylan Silvers, David Wilson, Mike Lamm, Jeff Parker, and Chadwick Ferman—fused 1980s synth textures with the Pixies’ hook-driven intensity to fuel compelling live performances. Following only their second show, held in Lawrence, KS, the band secured an agreement with an independent label for a five-song EP, which was succeeded by a 7" single issued on Denton, TX’s Quality Park Records. Their debut full-length concept album, The Technology, appeared on Beatville Records during summer 2001. Idol Records then issued the band’s self-titled second album in May 2002, a fiery, danceable, and memorable release that echoes Radio 4 while sharing sonic kinship with the unsettling 1980s-era film Donnie Darko.
