Born in Isleworth, England, guitarist and vocalist Dave Brock co-founded space rock pioneers Hawkwind and served as their enduring creative force. An uncle first presented him with a banjo, after which his parents supplied a guitar; jazz initially shaped his approach as he visited neighborhood venues and performed with a New Orleans-style ensemble. His growing attraction to the blues soon led to collaborations with future Yardbirds members Eric Clapton and Keith Relf. Brock sharpened his abilities by busking throughout London, later entering the Dharma Blues Band and assembling the brief psychedelic group Famous Cure prior to launching Hawkwind in 1969. The band cultivated a singularly psychedelic hard-rock aesthetic steeped in science-fiction imagery, drawing a devoted cult audience before achieving broad recognition via the 1972 U.K. hit “Silver Machine.” Although the roster shifted repeatedly—most prominently through the tenures of lyricist and singer Robert Calvert and future Motörhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister—Brock stayed the group’s central musical figure and chief songwriter across its history. In 1978 several ex-members took legal action against Brock concerning ownership of the Hawkwind name, resulting in that year’s album 25 Years On appearing under the Hawklords moniker. The dispute was settled, and although Hawkwind never gained widespread attention outside Britain, the band has continued to draw large domestic crowds on tour more than thirty years after its formation.
