Biography
Baby-faced Canadian performer and writer Dave Foley abandoned his schooling to become part of Toronto’s Second City Comedy Troupe. His first screen appearance came in the 1986 comedy High Stakes, after which he took roles in multiple made-for-television films. Together with longtime acquaintance Kevin McDonald he launched the sketch troupe and ensuing television program The Kids in the Hall, a name drawn from a Jack Benny routine. Broadcast between 1989 and 1994, the series attracted a loyal audience and received several Emmy nominations. Foley contributed scripts while also performing, creating such memorable figures as Manservant Hecubus, Bruno Puntz Jones, and the unhinged Jerry Sizzler. Following the program’s end the ensemble maintained its ties through the 1996 theatrical release Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy and the 2001 stage production Kids in the Hall: Same Guys New Dresses. After moving to Los Angeles Foley took a part in It’s Pat and landed the lead role of station manager Dave Nelson on the sitcom NewsRadio, which aired from 1995 to 1999. During the same period he wrote, produced, and starred in the comedy The Wrong Guy, earning Best Screenplay honors at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival. Additional film work in Hollywood included supporting turns in the comedies Hacks, Blast from the Past, and Dick. He supplied the voice of Flik the Ant for A Bug’s Life, Toy Story 2, and It’s Tough to Be a Bug, along with assorted characters in the South Park feature, the IMAX production CyberWorld, and the miniseries From the Earth to the Moon. Blending his animation and sketch-comedy experience, Foley next starred in Monkeybone, which drew partly from the graphic novel Dark Town. Onstage he performed in the musical comedy White Trash Wins Lotto during its run at The Roxy in Hollywood. Further screen appearances came in On the Line, Run Ronnie Run!, and Stark Raving Mad. Returning to Canada in 2003, he joined the cast of the comedy Whitecoats under director Dave Thomas. The following year he hosted Bravo’s Celebrity Poker Showdown, and in 2006 he recorded a brief vocal cameo for the Pixar film Cars. A substantial role in Uwe Boll’s Postal arrived in 2007. The Kids in the Hall reconvened in 2010 for the six-episode series Death Comes to Town, delighting longtime followers. Foley issued his first comedy album, Relatively Well, through New Wave Dynamics in 2013.
