David Benoit stands among the defining figures in contemporary jazz through his measured and lyrical approach as a pianist, composer, and arranger. Emerging during the fusion years of the late 1970s, he quickly established himself at the leading edge of the crossover jazz movement. Drawing from the examples of Dave Brubeck, Bill Evans, and Vince Guaraldi, he achieved his first major recognition with the Grammy-nominated Every Step of the Way in 1987 and has since placed numerous albums in the Top Ten of the contemporary jazz charts, among them Inner Motion from 1990, Right Here, Right Now from 2003, Earthglow from 2010, and David Benoit and Friends from 2019. Partnerships with Russ Freeman and the Rippingtons, Dave Koz, Marc Antoine, Brian Bromberg, and Jane Monheit, among others, have yielded similarly strong results. Although his primary work centers on small-group recordings, he has also pursued big-band and orchestral projects, among them his participation in the GRP All-Star Big Band. The 2022 album A Midnight Rendezvous presented both dimensions of his creative output.

Born in Bakersfield, California in 1953, Benoit received classical piano instruction during his teenage years. Following high school, he pursued studies in composition and piano at El Camino College while also taking film-scoring courses at UCLA. In addition to serving as musical director for singer Lainie Kazan, he secured varied engagements by the mid-1970s, among them contributing to the soundtrack of director Robert Altman’s film Nashville. He further recorded with Alphonse Mouzon and accompanied singer Gloria Lynne prior to issuing his solo debut, Heavier Than Yesterday, on the Blue Moon label in 1977. Several subsequent albums steeped in funk, disco, and fusion elements, including Can You Imagine in 1980 and Digits in 1983, foreshadowed the crossover direction he would later refine.

Signing as a solo artist with GRP in 1986, Benoit earned a Grammy nomination for Every Step of the Way the following year. Additional well-received releases such as Waiting for Spring in 1989 and Professional Dreamer in 1999 continued to display his smooth, lyrical sensibility. He also appeared on the label’s Big Band projects, including the Grammy-nominated GRP All-Star Big Band recording of 1992.

In 2000 he expressed his admiration for Vince Guaraldi’s Peanuts scores through the tribute album Here’s to You, Charlie Brown!: 50 Great Years!. A decade after their initial collaboration, Benoit reunited with Russ Freeman for Benoit/Freeman Project 2, issued by the Concord-affiliated Peak label in 2004. For Orchestral Works in 2005 he was joined by the Czech National Symphony Orchestra together with members of the Asia America Symphony Orchestra. Two studio albums appeared in 2006: Full Circle and Standards. With Heroes in 2008 Benoit honored several of his musical influences by interpreting songs associated with Elton John, the Beatles, Dave Brubeck, and others.

Two years afterward he released the Clark Germain-produced, electronica-inflected Earthglow, followed in 2012 by Conversation, whose title track—drawn from his “Music for Two Trios” suite—contrasted a classical trio with a jazz trio. In 2014 Benoit contributed to former Ambrosia guitarist David Pack’s Napa Crossroads project alongside Alan Parsons, Ray Manzarek, Larry Carlton, Mindi Abair, and additional artists.

His next recording marked a deliberate shift toward an all-original vocal collection. Working with lyricists Lorraine Feather, Mark Winkler, and Spencer Day, he issued 2 in Love in June 2015, which featured Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist Jane Monheit. She appeared prominently again on the Christmas recording Believe, released just four months later. In 2017 Benoit joined guitarist Marc Antoine for So Nice! on Shanachie Records, while also delivering the solo piano album The Steinway Sessions and reaching the top of the contemporary jazz chart as a guest on Dave Koz’s 20th Anniversary Christmas. The 2019 album David Benoit & Friends united him with saxophonists Dave Koz and Vincent Ingala, guitarists Peter White and Marc Antoine, and vocalist Lindsey Webster. A Midnight Rendezvous arrived in 2022 as Benoit’s first big-band recording released under his own name.
