Biography
Bassist David "Solid" Gould grew up in Merrick, NY, where an early passion for music and striking natural ability quickly surfaced. At seven he took up the trumpet, yet his focus soon shifted to bass, the instrument that became his true domain. Following college he relocated to Boston, assembling the funk ensemble Board of Education and later joining Crown Electric Company. In 1997 he entered the lineup of New York reggae outfit John Brown's Body, known as JBB, performing alongside saxophonist Lee Hamilton, drummer Tommy Benedetti, trumpeter Chris Welter, and guitarist Kevin Kinsella. With the arrival of the new millennium Gould launched a solo career, issuing his first album on the I-Town Records imprint. That project, completed three years after his arrival in JBB, carried the title Adonai & I; one year afterward came the follow-up Adonai in Dub. Both releases drew on fellow musicians from his prior groups. His sound fuses roots reggae with traditional Hebrew prayers, as heard on tracks such as "Adon Olam Dub," "L'Dor Vador Dub," "Etz Chayim Hee Deb," and "Sim Shalom Dub."
