Biography
David Mann, an American performer skilled in acting, singing, and stand-up comedy, gained broad recognition during the 2000s through his portrayal of Mr. Brown in Tyler Perry productions including the film Madea's Family Reunion (2002) and the 2008 movie Meet the Browns, which later spawned a television adaptation. He and his spouse Tamela Mann built a versatile partnership as a prominent entertainment duo active in cinema, gospel performances, philanthropy, and series such as the 2015 sitcom Mann & Wife along with the reality program It's a Mann's World. The pair issued their romantic soul project Us Against the World in 2018.
Raised in Fort Worth, Mann discovered an early passion for performance and gravitated toward humorous parts in school productions. He progressed into community theater, wed Tamela during the late 1980s, and achieved wider notice after aligning with playwright and actor Tyler Perry. Perry placed him in the 1999 stage work I Can Do Bad All by Himself as the inquisitive, sharp-tongued neighbor Mr. Brown, a part that anchored his trajectory and opened doors to ongoing appearances alongside Tamela in subsequent plays plus opportunities in film and television.
During the 2000s Mann continued embodying Mr. Brown across Perry stage pieces such as Madea's Family Reunion (2002), Meet the Browns (2004), and What's Done in the Dark (2008) while developing his stand-up career and periodically performing gospel music with Tamela. He released the 2007 comedy album Mr. Brown's Good Ol' Time Church under the Leroy Brown persona. After Meet the Browns reached theaters in 2008 and became a television series the following year, both Manns appeared in the adaptations. He contributed vocals to Tamela's gospel release The Master Plan in 2010, then returned as Mr. Brown with her for the 2011 feature Madea's Big Happy Family. From 2015 onward the couple headlined Mann & Wife and the documentary series It's a Mann's World. Their initial joint album as a duo, Us Against the World, arrived in 2018.
