Biography
David Nance long stood as a fixture in Omaha's Nebraska music community before emerging as a cult figure through his fervent recordings, which blend psychedelia, blues, hard rock, and inventive noise into his own combustible mix. Gritty and attitude-driven, Nance's work also highlights sharp songwriting shaped by his wide-ranging affinity for classic rock, evidenced by his full-album covers of Lou Reed, the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones. From 2012 onward he issued numerous self-released home recordings on which he handled every instrument, yet fuller band arrangements yielded stronger results, expanding his reach via 2016's More Than Enough and 2017's Negative Boogie. Listeners nostalgic for the raw edges of his initial efforts found satisfaction in the lo-fi psych-blues reflection of 2020's Staunch Honey, while 2024's David Nance & Mowed Sound adopted a roots-oriented, 1970s-inflected approach.
Born and raised in Grand Island, Nebraska, roughly 150 miles from Omaha, Nance encountered a limited local music environment and relocated to Omaha once his passion for guitar and songwriting intensified, seeking a more supportive setting. There he integrated into the scene by contributing guitar to outfits including the Prairies, Noah Sterba & the Cocktails, Simon Joyner & the Ghosts, and Brimstone Howl.
After extended collaboration with fellow musicians, Nance assembled a modest home studio and began issuing lo-fi albums of his material on cassette or digital platforms, frequently performing every part himself. Certain releases featured originals, while others reinterpreted classic works such as Lou Reed's Berlin, Beatles for Sale, and Doug Sahm and Band. Local notice arrived in 2013 with Actor's Diary, prompting a brief relocation with his wife to Los Angeles for further work; dissatisfaction led him to discard the sessions three times before returning to Omaha to begin anew.
That effort, recorded swiftly and informally with select Omaha players, became More Than Enough. Brooklyn's Ba Da Bing Records issued the album nationally in 2016, and favorable notices plus a vigorous WFMU-FM session helped Nance reach listeners beyond Nebraska. For his follow-up Ba Da Bing project, Negative Boogie, released in July 2017, he shifted to Omaha's Another Recording Company studios, where he and his band completed fifteen tracks across three days.
Nance subsequently partnered with Trouble in Mind for the 2018 release Peaced and Slightly Pulverized, a brooding guitar-rock set, then returned to home recording for the more restrained 2020 album Staunch Honey. He next assembled the band Mowed Sound, comprising guitarist James Schroeder, bassist Derrick Higgins, and drummer Kevin Dohahue, to track material inspired by 1970s country-rock across sessions running from October 2021 to February 2022 and again from December 2022 to January 2023. Retaining a roots foundation while incorporating his rock edge, the resulting David Nance & Mowed Sound appeared in February 2024 as his debut on Jack White's Third Man Records.
