Born on 2 February 1958 in Glasgow, Scotland, Newton studied piano, clarinet and bassoon in his early years. While enrolled at Leeds College of Music he elected to devote himself solely to the piano. After semi-professional work with assorted groups, his first paid engagement arrived in 1978 when he directed a trio at a Bradford restaurant in Yorkshire. During the same period he appeared with many other ensembles whose styles ranged from traditional jazz and funk to strict-tempo dance music and classical repertoire. In the early 1980s he devoted considerable time to theatre, most notably with Alan Ayckbourn, the playwright based in Scarborough. Newton later returned to Scotland and, operating from Edinburgh, quickly gained recognition as an emerging jazz figure. He served in backing ensembles for visiting artists including Art Farmer, Bud Shank, Shorty Rogers and Nat Adderley, and he recorded with Buddy De Franco. By the late 1980s he had moved to London, where he recorded with Alan Barnes, the Jazz Renegades and Martin Taylor; the latter collaboration included a tour of India. He also performed club engagements with Andy Cleyndert, Don Weller, Spike Robinson and others. At the close of the decade he became Carol Kidd’s accompanist and musical director, recording with her and appearing in numerous concerts. During the 1990s he worked productively with Clark Tracey and Tina May. An outstanding musician whose varied experience enables him to perform comfortably in almost any setting, Newton has forged a distinctive and distinguished personal style despite his wide-ranging interests.
