Biography
David Orlowsky established the klezmer-focused David Orlowsky Trio and remained a key participant for many years, while also engaging with diverse classical repertoire on the clarinet. Warner Classics welcomed him to its roster in 2022, issuing his debut recording on the label that year. Born August 26, 1981, in Tübingen in what was then West Germany, Orlowsky assembled the ensemble at sixteen with guitarist Jens-Uwe Popp and double bassist Florian Dohrmann. Operating variously as Klezmorim and David Orlowsky's Klezmorim, the group sustained its activities for twenty-one years, presenting klezmer shaped by classical influences until disbanding in 2019. From 2002 to 2007 he pursued classical clarinet studies with Manfred Lindner at Folkwang-Hochschule in Essen, later continuing at the Manhattan School of Music in New York with Charles Neidich and Ayako Oshima. Orlowsky also composes, with his works issued by Schott Music. The David Orlowsky Trio produced numerous albums for Sony Classical. Three received Germany's ECHO Klassik awards in the Classical Without Borders category: David Orlowsky's Klezmorim in 2008, Jeremiah (with Singer Pur) in 2011, and Klezmer Kings -- A Tribute in 2015. Independently, Orlowsky has created recordings and toured Europe, the Americas, and Asia. His collaborations span many artists and media, including the Danish String Quartet, Deutsches Kammerorchester Berlin, pianist Martha Argerich, violinist Vilde Frang, and Singer Pur, with whom he has frequently performed works by Palestrina. He has described himself as a vocalist who sings through his instrument. Signed to Warner Classics as a solo artist, Orlowsky joined lutenist David Bergmüller for the 2022 album Alter Ego, which features music by Dowland, Purcell, and others alongside the duo's original compositions.
