A pianist and violinist by training, the musician completed studies at the University of Illinois under Salvatore Martirano. Initial projects examined brainwaves and the nervous system, incorporated cross-cultural collaborations, and investigated compositional algorithms. Since 1990 the artist has held dual roles at CAL Arts as Dean of the School of Music and Co-Director of the Center for Experiments in Art, Information and Technology. Between 1979 and 1990 teaching duties at Mills College encompassed the posts of Professor of Music, Head of the Music Department, and Director of the Center for Contemporary Music, together with occupancy of the Darius Milhaud Chair from 1987 to 1990. Additional periods of work and instruction took place at the Center for Creative and Performing Arts at SUNY Buffalo, the Electric Circus, York University in Toronto as Professor of Music and Interdisciplinary Studies, the University of Illinois, NYU, Banff Center for the Arts, Simon Fraser University, the Aesthetic Research Centre of Canada, San Francisco Art Institute, and California College of Arts and Crafts.
