David Saltier earned the description "probably the last of the old-style Judeo-Spanish singers from Salonica." Oud, violin, frame drum, and cymbalom support his innovative readings of age-old material, which he performs in Ladino, the Hebrew-Spanish hybrid comparable to Yiddish. Born in Thessalonkia in Salonica—the Greek harbor that lies between Athens and Istanbul and close to Macedonia and Bulgaria—he began committing songs to tape in the 1950s. Berlin, Germany reached listeners in 1997; Jewish-Spanish Songs of Thessalonika appeared the year after.
