Biography
Known alternatively as Davy DMX after the Oberheim drum machine, Davy D. first entered hip-hop through neighborhood DJ sets across Queens. During the early 1980s he served as guitarist in a trio completed by bassist Larry Smith and drummer Trevor Gale; together they formed Orange Krush, which issued several singles while also supplying backing tracks for Run-D.M.C., Sweet G, and Lovebug Starski. Once that band dissolved, he continued as both DJ and guitarist for Kurtis Blow, contributing substantially to “If I Ruled the World” and “The Breaks.” Standalone singles such as 1984’s “One for the Treble” and 1985’s “The DMX Will Rock” established his solo profile, leading Def Jam to release the full-length Davy's Ride in 1987. In addition to intermittent production work, Davy DMX joined the Afros, a humorous outfit that had grown out of Solo Sounds. Tuff City later issued the four-track compilation FFFresh without his knowledge.
