Mark Spybey, previously a member of the groundbreaking industrial outfit Zoviet France, launched Dead Voices on Air as his own improvisational panambient endeavor. Employed by day as a mental health care therapist, he started DVOA activities in 1992 after moving from his native Britain to Canada, shaping experimental soundscapes from processed tones produced by primitive instruments and children's toys while avoiding conventional sequencers and samplers; the first result appeared in 1993 as the cassette-only Abrader. After signing to the Invisible label, Dead Voices on Air returned in 1994 with Hafted Maul, then delivered New Words Machine the following year. Across the subsequent two years Spybey released four further LPs—SHAP, How Hollow Heart, Fire in the Bronx Zoo, and the joint Spybey:Theriault with French-Canadian composer Jean-Yves Theriault. The double-disc Piss Frond arrived in 1998, followed two years later by Frankie Pett Presents .. The Happy Submarines.
