Biography
Death to Anders came together when singer/guitarist Rob Danson and guitarist Nicholas Ceglio met as students at the Musician's Institute in Hollywood, California. While most classmates pursued heavy metal or progressive rock, the pair connected through a mutual appreciation for indie rock touchstones such as Sonic Youth, the Pixies, and especially Pavement, the latter a frequent point of comparison for the band. They first appeared as a duo before adding bassist Peter DiBiasio and drummer John Broeckel, whose partnership stretched back to the late '90s in Crooner, a group whose other alumni would later establish Silversun Pickups. With the lineup complete, Death to Anders began regular appearances at clubs in Los Angeles' Echo Park and Silverlake areas. The band soon joined several other local acts—the Transmissions, One Trick Pony, Anchors for Architects, the Happy Hollows, and Die Rockers Die—to create the Central Second Collective, an alliance committed to supporting original music in Los Angeles and securing shows for deserving artists. In fall 2005 they self-released their debut album, Punctuate the Calamities, which had been recorded at the Musician's Institute studios and drew enthusiastic reviews that strengthened their profile across the West Coast. In 2008 Death to Anders worked with producer Dave Newton on their second album, the more expansive concept piece Fictitious Business, which delivered a skeptical view of life in the new millennium. The EP Enigmatic Market appeared later that same year.
