Deb Pasternak, the Boston-based singer-songwriter, draws her primary inspiration from Joni Mitchell and Rickie Lee Jones, crafting songs that fuse folk foundations with a pronounced jazz sensibility and additional shadings of rock, pop, country, and blues. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, she originally intended to pursue marine ecology until a severe episode of rheumatoid arthritis struck, eliminating any prospect of extended time aboard vessels and even causing a temporary inability to walk. Following her recovery, she redirected her energies toward music—her other central passion—while sharpening her guitar technique and songwriting abilities. Pasternak relocated to Boston in 1992, where she built a following on the city’s thriving singer-songwriter circuit and ultimately received a Boston Music Award for Outstanding New Contemporary Folk Act in 1996. Her self-released album More secured a national distribution agreement in 1997 once a track from it was included on the compilation This Is Boston, Not Austin.
