Among Italy's most adventurous jazz rock ensembles stand the Turin-based Dedalus, whose limited visibility outside specialist circles has elevated their pair of albums to collector treasures. The group came together in 1972 when Marco Di Castri on guitar and sax, Fiorenzo Bonansone on keyboards and cello, Furio Di Castri on bass, and Enrico Grosso on drums signed with the sought-after Trident imprint and issued their self-titled debut the next year. Following Di Castri's departure soon after that release, the remaining members elected to continue without a replacement, shifting emphasis toward electronics and avant-garde textures in place of the missing bass line. Those explorations found full expression on the 1974 album Materiale per Tre Esecutori e Nastro Magnetico, after which Dedalus disbanded later the same year.
