Biography
Although the Deep Blue Organ Trio did not adopt its official name until 2000, Hammond B-3 organist Chris Foreman, drummer Greg Rockingham, and guitarist Bobby Broom had already formed connections in the 1980s while performing in Chicago clubs. Their paths continued to intersect, leading them to appear together as a unit throughout the Windy City even as each musician separately supported jazz and blues figures such as Hank Crawford, Albert Collins, Nat Adderley, Kenny Burrell, Charles Earland, Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Stanley Turrentine, and Kenny Burrell. By 2001 the trio began advancing its goal of updating the jazz organ-trio format for the new millennium. While rooted in organ jazz, the group also incorporates funk, soul, R&B, gospel, and spirituals. Their debut release on Delmark, Deep Blue Bruise, appeared in 2004. The follow-up, Going to Town: Live at the Green Mill, captured performances from their longstanding Tuesday-night residency at Chicago’s Green Mill Lounge, which began in 2003, and a DVD of the same show was issued alongside the CD.
