For those worried that goth rock met an untimely end in the late 1990s, the arrival of torch-bearing acts such as Deep Red supplies welcome evidence that the style remains vital. The Miami, Florida-based duo DC Astro and Martha M. Arce formed the project in 1996 and soon secured a deal with Candyland Entertainment, the label operated by members of the German industrial outfit Project Pitchfork. Early on, Deep Red appeared on multiple compilations, among them The Goth Box and the Siouxsie & the Banshees tribute Through a Looking Glass. Their debut album, The Awakening, also surfaced in 1996. The following year the band added Mario Soto and toured Europe as support for their friends Project Pitchfork. Darkwaters, the group’s second full-length, arrived in 2000; at the same time its members began producing other artists, including Open Canvas, while Arce initiated the solo endeavor Distorted Reality. Chimera, Deep Red’s third album, is slated for release in late 2001.
