Bolstered by dense layers of guitar chords, faded rhythmic backdrops, and evocative lyrical sketches, Deeper Sleeper functions as the personal notebook of its lone creator Joshua Harmon, the lead singer of indie folk outfit the Backseat Lovers. His self-titled debut highlights this unvarnished side through selections such as “wishing for you,” “riverflies,” and “want.”

A native of Salt Lake City, Utah, the singer and guitarist launched the Backseat Lovers in his final high school semester alongside area musicians encountered at open-mike events near Provo, namely guitarist Jonas Swanson, bassist KJ Ward, and drummer Juice Welch. Their independently released first album When We Were Friends found favor on alternative radio after arriving in 2019, enabling the group to keep building momentum through live dates once COVID-19 measures relaxed. The quartet appeared at Lollapalooza in 2021 and followed with the release of Waiting to Spill on Capitol Records the next year.

Harmon unveiled the Deeper Sleeper tracks in 2024, shortly ahead of regrouping with the Backseat Lovers to begin work on a third album. Although it forgoes the restless drive of his band recordings, the project supplies a revealing look at his studio methods as he sharpens his songwriting and delivery. He performed every part himself, generating hypnotic loops and blurred guitar patterns that depart from standard band demos to establish a singular, welcoming sonic world.
