New York native Dena Miller shapes the tender self-examinations released under the Deer Scout name. Warm, articulate vocals and folk-rooted melodies first surfaced on a string of concise recordings issued in the closing years of the 2010s, among them the modestly viral “sad boy,” before her 2022 full-length Woodpecker marked the artist’s introduction on Carpark Records.

Born to folk performers—her father, Mark Miller, having also composed early Sega video-game scores—Dena Miller spent her Yonkers childhood capturing original songs on a toy cassette recorder while still in elementary school. Serious work began only after she left for college in Philadelphia, where she first used the Deer Scout alias. The 2016 EP customs featured her father on bass alongside additional guests on drums and guitar. Streaming figures in the hundreds of thousands followed the 2017 single “sad boy.” After transferring to Oberlin College in Ohio, Deer Scout maintained a schedule of touring and intermittent EPs, among them the early-2018 set covers with hayden (a collaboration with Hayden Arp that revisited songs by Porches and Adrianne Lenker) and the early-2019 release tour stop at all night diner, which included bassist Ko Takasugi-Czernowin.

Woodpecker, the Carpark debut, was tracked with Takasugi-Czernowin, cellist Zuzia Weyman, drummer Madel Rafter, and Mark Miller on guitar. One track, “Peace with the Damage,” originated with his band Spuyten Duyvil; it sits beside seven originals by Dena Miller on the intimate album issued in April 2022.
