Germany's Defeated Sanity emerged as a technical death metal outfit whose sound fuses idiosyncratic rhythms with a fiercely progressive sensibility. Drawing early inspiration from Cannibal Corpse and Suffocation, the ensemble refined its churning style through club performances and appearances on secondary stages at various festivals. Their aggressive attack layers uncommon time signatures beneath guttural vocals, jagged and heavily distorted guitar work, and a prominent, distorted bass presence, weaving together strands of prog, hardcore, and death metal.

The band's first album-length recording, Prelude to the Tragedy, appeared in 2004. After signing with Willowtip Records, they issued a succession of increasingly ambitious releases—Chapters of Repugnance (2010), Disposal of the Dead/Dharmata (2016), and The Sanguinary Impetus (2020)—that incorporated classical and jazz elements into their relentless death-metal framework. Following the COVID-19 lockdowns of 2020 and early 2021, the members exchanged home-recorded demos before returning to the road in 2022 and entering the studio in late 2023; Chronicles of Lunacy was released by Season of Mist in November 2024.

Guitarist Wolfgang Teske and his son, drummer Lille Gruber, formed Defeated Sanity in 1994 in the northern Bavarian town of Dachsbach. The project became a full-time endeavor in 1996 when bassist Jonas Gruber and vocalist Robert Colnik joined, both appearing on the earliest demos, Devoured by the Black and Withdrawn from Beauty. Additional demo recordings and split 7"s followed amid further lineup adjustments before the debut album surfaced on U.K. label Grindethic Records in November 2004. That same year the group performed at Rotterdam Deathfest alongside Suffocation and Visceral Remains. Ahead of the 2007 release of Psalms of the Moribund, the lineup stabilized around vocalist Jens Staschel, guitarist Christian Kuehn, and bassist Jacob Schmidt.

Co-founder Teske and Staschel both exited in 2008, leaving Gruber as the sole remaining original member. Disgorge vocalist A.J. Magana handled vocals for Chapters of Repugnance, the first album issued on Willowtip, where the band remained for subsequent projects. Konstantin Lühring assumed vocal duties on 2013's Passages Into Deformity, after which the two-part Disposal of the Dead/Dharmata arrived in 2016, introducing vocalist Josh Welshman; from that point Welshman, Gruber, and Schmidt formed the group's creative core. Their technical command continued to expand on the punishing 2020 album The Sanguinary Impetus.
