Japanese death metal outfit Defiled originated in Tokyo during 1992 with an initial lineup that included guitarist Yusuke Sumita, bassist Norihisa Fukuda, vocalist Masafumi Kitamura, and drummer Kouji Uchida. Neither Masafumi Kitamura nor Kouji Uchida survived beyond the band’s independently funded 1994 debut EP, Defeat of Sanity. Hideki Fujimoto stepped in on vocals and Yuichi Ishiguro on drums, yet the group remained little more than a domestic touring act until 1999, when Nightfall Records in the United States offered them their first international contract and issued the debut full-length, Erupted Wrath. Ugliness Revealed arrived in 2001 with session drummer Naoki Akamatsu, followed by Divination in 2003; both records drew largely favorable coverage, supported by multiple U.S. festival appearances and frequent stylistic nods to technical death metal forerunners such as Gorguts and Suffocation. Momentum stalled when the members opted for a “creative break” rather than building on Divination’s profile. That hiatus stretched almost eight years until the 2011 release of In Crisis, produced by Bill Metoyer and issued through Season of Mist. Four years later the band resurfaced once more with Towards Inevitable Ruin in 2016.
