Biography
Del Wood ranks among country music’s finest female instrumentalists and stands out as one of the rare women who reached stardom as a pianist. Her signature recording, a playful take on “Down Yonder,” climbed both the country and pop charts in 1951, securing a gold record and an invitation to perform as a guest on the Grand Ole Opry. She joined the Opry’s regular cast in 1952 and stayed on its roster until she died in 1989.
Born Polly Adelaide Hendricks in Nashville, Tennessee, she began piano lessons at five. The stage name Del Wood was formed by merging syllables from her middle name with syllables from her married surname, Hazelwood. Despite scoring only that single hit, she issued numerous albums across a lengthy career.
