Delakota, a British outfit, launched their path through performances inside damp caves along with a spot on BBC 2's "Newsnight." Their sound targets the elusive overlap of disorganized Madchester indie, wistful retro-rock, and rough-edged contemporary dance. Des Murphy and Cass Browne, previously of Smashing Things, introduced the project in 1997 through a restricted white-label single called "C'mon Cincinnati." Wider international notice arrived only after a well-regarded David Holmes remix and the first commercial outing of "The Rock." The latter track's signature blend of unsteady rhythms and Primal Scream guitar lines sparked particular interest within British indie circles, soon leading to support slots on national tours by established bands such as Embrace. Further momentum built in late 1998 when the group's debut album, One Love—a clear Stone Roses reference—collected uniformly favorable notices together with solid cult traction.
