With influences drawing from punk, post-rock, and Americana, Washington, D.C.'s Deleted Scenes emerged as one of the scene's more eclectic outfits. The band took shape in 2005 after longtime friends vocalist/guitarist Dan Scheuerman, guitarist/keyboardist Dominic Campanaro, and bassist/guitarist/vocalist Matt Dowling decided to keep performing once their earlier group, Fell Off the Face of the Earth, had dissolved. Scheuerman, who had sung and played music from childhood alongside family members, received early guidance on band life from his older brother Vince of Army of Me. Founding drummer Brian Hospital joined the three, and in 2007 they issued Deleted Scenes' first EP.

L. Skell produced and J. Robbins engineered the quartet's initial full-length, Birdseed Shirt, which appeared in 2009. The musicians later rejoined Skell and enlisted Nick Krill of the Spinto Band to shape Young People's Church of the Air, an experimental collection reflecting '80s pop, R&B, and surf rock; Sockets Records put it out in 2011, with Park the Van handling a 2012 reissue.

Ricardo Lagomasino came aboard as the new drummer in 2012, prompting a shift toward a more collective songwriting process in which Dowling and Campanaro joined Scheuerman as contributors. Early the following year the group began recording Lithium Burn with producers Brian McTear and Jon Low. The album's direct, personal songs took their title from the acid reflux Scheuerman suffered while on the mood stabilizer; it was released in April 2013.
