Biography
Demander originated when vocalist/bassist Karen Kanan Corrêa and drummer Sivan Harlap—both previously of the Hissyfits—assembled the band to operate within the same indie-rock orbit occupied by Sleater-Kinney and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. In 2005 the trio coalesced in New York City once guitarist Jared Scott completed its mixed-gender roster. Following the appearance of a self-titled EP, the group raised its visibility through joint tours with the Hold Steady, Morningwood, and the Giraffes. It then withdrew temporarily to Brooklyn to lay down its first full-length album, The Unkindness of Ravens, which surfaced in restricted pressings during 2007. A wider commercial edition arrived the next year, after which Demander devoted the opening months of 2009 to tracking its sophomore effort, Future Brite, ultimately released in 2010.
