Through his roles as a harpist, producer, and disc jockey, Dennis Gruenling sustained the essence of classic post-war electric blues well into the new millennium. His raw, forceful approach, shaped by harmonica greats including Little Walter and Junior Wells, pairs a gritty tone with equally assertive harp lines and vocals. Gruenling earned Real Blues magazine’s Best Modern Blues Harmonica Player award on three occasions. As a frontman he gained notice with 1999’s Dennis Gruenling & Jump Time and the 2008 release I Just Keep Lovin’ Him (A Tribute to Little Walter), yet he also built a strong reputation as a supporting player, touring and recording with the Nick Moss Band, most recently on its 2023 album Get Your Back Into It.

Born in New Jersey, Gruenling first picked up the harmonica during his teenage years after receiving an initial blues harp from a family friend one Christmas. Exposure to the landmark 1990 collection Harp Attack!, which spotlighted James Cotton, Carey Bell, and Junior Wells, ignited his passion for the blues and soon led him to Little Walter and Big Walter Horton. Fully committed to the instrument, he left school, traveled to New Orleans with a girlfriend to absorb further influences and refine his technique, then returned to New Jersey in 1994. Continuing to perform locally, he assembled the jump-blues and boogie-woogie outfit Jump Time in 1998; the group issued its debut, Dennis Gruenling & Jump Time, on his own Back Bender Records imprint the following year.

Additional projects arrived swiftly: the solo outing Up All Night in 2000 and a second Jump Time album, That’s Right!, in 2001, after which he paused the band’s activities. Over the ensuing period Gruenling lent his services to recordings by Gina Sicilia, Dave Gross, Jumpin’ Jack, and Peter Karp. In 2006 he joined fellow harpist Richard Sleigh for the album Volume 1. The next year brought an unexpected session, supplying harp parts for the self-titled release by emo-pop act and MTV Band in a Bubble participants Cartel. For 2008’s I Just Keep Lovin’ Him: A Tribute to Little Walter, Gruenling gathered fellow harmonica luminaries Kim Wilson, Rick Estrin, and Steve Guyger. The 2010 concert recording History of the Blues Harmonica Concert captured a live master-class performance alongside David Barrett, Joe Filisko, and Kinya Pollard. Beyond performing, Gruenling hosted the weekly WFDU program Blues & the Beat from Teaneck, New Jersey, conducted harmonica workshops and private instruction, and championed equipment for players. In 2012 he partnered with Detroit guitarist Doug Deming and the Jewel Tones on two albums, leading Rockin’ All Day while Deming fronted What’s It Gonna Take. Four years later the same alliance produced Ready or Not. Gruenling also appeared on Peter Karp’s 2016 live set The Arson’s Match: Peter Karp, Live in NYC, which included former Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor.

Gruenling subsequently forged a continuing association with guitarist Nick Moss, contributing harp and lead vocals to the Nick Moss Band’s 2018 Alligator Records album The High Cost of Low Living. The partnership continued on the band’s 2019 effort Lucky Guy! and again on 2023’s Get Your Back Into It.
