A guitarist and vocalist in the blues idiom, Dennis Johnson has earned acclaim for his command of slide technique across modern electric blues, country-blues, gospel, and additional roots forms. The California native first appeared on record with Slide Show in 2010 and has since remained a fixture on American and British blues and roots charts. Rhythmland, issued in 2017, carried him into unexplored terrain shaped by funky Latin, Americana, and folk currents. He continued with Revelation in 2022, a vigorous blues-rock collection that signaled a marked change in direction for the seasoned performer.

Raised in the Bay Area, Johnson gravitated toward pioneering rock and blues figures and began teaching himself guitar during his teenage years. After absorbing Chuck Berry, he encountered the work of Roy Rogers and Robert Johnson, both of whom left a lasting mark. Slide playing held particular appeal, prompting focused technical development. Local performances followed, though he remained uncertain about turning professional until Honey Boy Edwards offered decisive encouragement, prompting the release of Slide Show in 2010.

From the outset Johnson wove delta, country, and jump blues into his approach, a pattern sustained on his next effort, Slide Avenue, which appeared in 2014. The album, like its predecessor, received praise on both sides of the Atlantic and reached the top of the Roots Music Report’s radio chart. While maintaining national touring commitments, he continued writing and tracking material that expanded his stylistic range and tested his instrumental command. Issued in 2017 under the name Dennis Johnson and the Mississippi Ramblers, Rhythmland conveyed an animated, near-funky character drawn from folk, Latin, rock, and blues sources.

For his fourth album Johnson concentrated exclusively on electric guitar, pursuing a tone associated with the classic Fender Tweed Deluxe amplifier. In collaboration with drummer Anton Fig, bassist Bob Fridzema, piano and organist Jonathan Stoyanoff, and engineer Chris Bell, he completed Revelation, a collection of intense tracks released in 2022 that ascended to number one on the Worldwide Roots Music Report’s Blues Rock album chart.
