Biography
Depeche Mode, an English outfit that emerged as pioneers, transformed the underground electronic club music of the early 1980s into sounds capable of filling stadiums within ten years and ranked among the globe’s top-selling international acts as a result. Among the earliest groups to build an entire musical identity around synthesizers alone, the band launched with a buoyant electro-pop energy that gradually shifted into a brooding, theatrical synth-rock approach, cementing their status as one of the defining alternative acts of their generation. They cultivated a modest European audience through initial releases such as the 1981 album Speak & Spell and the 1983 set Construction Time Again before achieving their American breakthrough in 1984 via the platinum-certified fourth LP Some Great Reward. Depeche Mode thereafter stayed prominent on international Top Ten lists with successful 1990s efforts including the landmark Violator and their debut U.S./U.K. chart-topper, the grunge-tinged Songs of Faith and Devotion. Although internal tensions and battles with substance abuse nearly derailed the group by the late 1990s, their constantly shifting sound kept pace with changing tastes, whether through the atmospheric trip-hop of 1997’s Ultra or the digitized experimental electronics of 2001’s Exciter. By the late 2000s the trio enjoyed a commercial revival and fresh momentum with the chart-topping electro-rock album Playing the Angel, which inaugurated a new chapter that established Depeche Mode as elder statesmen of the style; they continued to lead sales with every following release and mounted their longest tour yet in support of their fourteenth studio album, the politically charged 2017 set Spirit. Significant developments marked their entry into the 2020s: after induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the lineup shrank to a duo following the 2022 death of founding member Andy “Fletch” Fletcher. The subsequent year they confronted those accumulated losses on the reflective album Memento Mori.
Originally shaped by Britain’s new romantic scene, Depeche Mode originated in 1976 when Basildon, England keyboardists Vince Clarke and Fletcher joined forces to create the short-lived group No Romance in China. By 1979 Clarke had assembled French Look, another duo that included guitarist/keyboardist Martin Gore; Fletcher soon joined, prompting a name change to Composition of Sound. Clarke initially sang before the addition of vocalist David Gahan in 1980 completed the lineup. Following one last rename to Depeche Mode, the quartet abandoned all instruments except synthesizers and refined a polished, techno-driven sound built around Clarke’s melodic hooks.
After gaining traction on the London club circuit, Depeche Mode debuted in 1980 with the track “Photographic,” featured on the Some Bizzare Album label compilation. Signing to Mute Records, they released “Dreaming of Me” in early 1981; although that single and its successor “New Life” attracted limited attention, the third single “Just Can’t Get Enough” reached the U.K. Top Ten, and the 1981 debut LP Speak and Spell also performed well. Just as major commercial success seemed imminent, principal songwriter Clarke suddenly departed to form Yazoo with singer Alison Moyet, leaving the band’s prospects uncertain.
With Gore assuming songwriting duties, the remaining trio added keyboardist Alan Wilder to replace the technical role vacated by Clarke. Although 1982’s A Broken Frame stayed close to the band’s prior approach, Gore’s darker compositions grew more confident and refined by the time of 1983’s Construction Time Again. Issued the next year, Some Great Reward marked their artistic and commercial breakthrough, spotlighting Gore’s shadowy, provocative themes of spiritual uncertainty (“Blasphemous Rumours”) and psychosexual power dynamics (“Master and Servant”); the inclusive single “People Are People” became a major hit on both sides of the Atlantic and reflected the music’s move toward industrial textures.
The atmospheric 1986 release Black Celebration sustained the drift toward somber melancholy and reinforced the group’s commercial standing, eventually moving more than 500,000 copies in the U.S. and earning gold certification. The 1987 album Music for the Masses, which yielded three Hot 100 singles—“Strangelove,” “Never Let Me Down Again,” and “Behind the Wheel”—pushed the band into the mainstream and sold over a million copies in the U.S. alone. A subsequent sold-out tour produced the 1989 double-live album 101, recorded at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, and paired with a concert film directed by D.A. Pennebaker.
Amid the alternative-music surge of the early 1990s, Depeche Mode rose to become one of the world’s most popular acts. The triple-platinum Violator, released in 1990, reached the Top Ten and generated the hits “Personal Jesus” (which peaked at number eight), “Enjoy the Silence,” “Policy of Truth,” and “World in My Eyes.” Capitalizing on that momentum, the 1993 LP Songs of Faith and Devotion—marked by heavier electric-guitar use—became the band’s first album to debut at number one in both the U.K. and U.S.; influenced by the rising grunge sounds of Soundgarden and Nirvana, the Flood-produced record featured the singles “I Feel You” and “Walking in My Shoes.” At the height of their success, however, the group began to fracture, starting with Wilder’s exit in 1995. Gahan attempted suicide and later entered rehabilitation to address a heroin addiction.
Following a four-year hiatus, Depeche Mode continued as a trio and issued 1997’s Ultra, which included the Tim Simenon-produced hits “Barrel of a Gun” and “It’s No Good.” A year later the band toured in support of the newly released compilation The Singles 86>98, performing 64 shows across 18 countries for more than one million fans. Each member then took extended time away, and Depeche Mode did not reconvene for another three years.
Exciter, the follow-up to Ultra, appeared in 2001. With LFO’s Mark Bell producing, the album adopted a more experimental and minimalist electronic character, evident on singles such as “Dream On” and “I Feel Loved.” Two years later Gahan released his first solo album, the dark and sultry Paper Monsters. Gore likewise issued the all-covers album Counterfeit², a full-length continuation of his similarly themed 1989 EP. After touring separately in support of their solo projects across the U.S. and Europe, the members regrouped to record again.
Launching a renewed later phase, their eleventh album Playing the Angel became a Top Ten hit upon its October 2005 release. Produced by Ben Hillier (Doves, Blur, U2, Elbow) and featuring singles such as “Precious” and “John the Revelator,” the record topped charts in 18 countries and achieved multi-platinum or gold status in 20 markets. Depeche Mode subsequently performed for more than two-and-a-half million fans worldwide, and the 2006 video release Touring the Angel: Live in Milan preserved one of their standout performances. After another Gahan solo project (2007’s Hourglass), the trio returned to the studio with Hillier to close the decade with 2009’s Sounds of the Universe.
Depeche Mode opened the 2010s with their thirteenth studio album Delta Machine, completing a trilogy of Hillier-produced records. Mixed by longtime associate Flood, Delta Machine debuted at number two in the U.K. and reached number six on the U.S. Billboard 200. The concert film and album Live in Berlin, directed by Anton Corbijn from a late-2013 performance, followed in November 2014.
The band returned in early 2017 with their fourteenth studio effort, Spirit. Largely inspired by the results of the 2016 U.S. presidential election and produced by Simian Mobile Disco’s James Ford (Foals, Arctic Monkeys), the album was propelled by the single “Where’s the Revolution” and debuted at number five on the Billboard 200. They supported it with an extensive international tour—their longest to date—that lasted until 2018. A commemorative tour documentary, the Corbijn-directed Spirits in the Forest, premiered in theaters in November 2019 and later appeared alongside the concert album LiVE SPiRiTS.
In 2020, at the outset of COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, Depeche Mode were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame alongside Nine Inch Nails, T. Rex, and others. A week after the announcement, they issued the expansive career-spanning box set MODE, which gathered all 14 studio albums (each with redesigned artwork) plus four discs of non-album singles, B-sides, and bonus tracks, along with a 228-page lyric and photo book. As the pandemic persisted, the band began work on their next album, the death- and mortality-centered Memento Mori. Before recording could begin, Fletcher died unexpectedly in May 2022 at age 60. Rather than disband, the remaining duo of Gore and Gahan continued, issuing the bittersweet single “Ghosts Again” in February 2023. The complete album arrived that March, again co-produced by Ford and Marta Salogni (Björk), with Richard Butler (Psychedelic Furs) co-writing several tracks. The record achieved global success, topping numerous charts worldwide while reaching number two in the U.K. and number 14 in the U.S.
