Biography
Pairing two of England's most irreverent comics and granting them license to tackle any topic, however explicit, captures the anarchic spirit that defined Derek & Clive. The characters served as alter egos for Dudley Moore, billed as Derek, and Peter Cook, billed as Clive, both veterans of Beyond the Fringe. Feeding off one another in spontaneous bursts, the pair generated sketches alongside wildly irreverent song parodies written by Moore, among them the profane numbers "You Stupid C**t!," "Valerie's Hymen," "Cancer," "Celebrity Suicide," and "I Can't Shit."
The act took shape in the mid-'70s. In 1976 Derek & Clive joined the Broadway production Good Evening. During their New York run they captured a live set before a private crowd at Electric Ladyland studios; material from that session was later combined with recordings made at the Bottom Line club in 1973. The resulting album, Live, appeared at the end of 1976. Moving to Virgin Records in 1977, the duo issued Come Again and Ad Nauseum before parting ways in 1978.
After the split Moore achieved major success on screen, starring in the 1979 film 10 and the 1981 comedy Arthur. He passed away in 2002 at the age of 66.
