Derrick Starks & Today's Generation emerged from Detroit's seemingly inexhaustible pipeline of musical talent. Born to a pastor in that city, Starks formally launched Today's Generation in 1991 after sharing church stages with many of its future members throughout his youth. Three years later the ensemble issued a self-titled independent album on the local Aaron Records imprint, prompting industry insiders to take notice of the gifted leader. Those connections soon led to studio and stage work alongside John P. Kee, Shirley Caesar, the late James Moore, BeBe and CeCe Winans, Walter and Edwin Hawkins, Yolanda Adams, Rance Allen, Rev. Timothy Wright, and former Entertainment Tonight co-host John Tesh. Additional material penned by Starks found its way onto releases by the COGIC International Mass Choir, Ron Winans Family & Friends Choir, and Charlene Bell.

Training received from the late legendary Dr. Mattie Moss Clark enabled him to tour nationally and internationally as bandmember and music director for Vanessa Bell Armstrong, the Clark Sisters, and the Whitfield Company choir.

Starks and Today's Generation later joined the Crystal Rose roster, delivering the 1999 album He's on Time; their follow-up effort, Sacrifice, appeared on the same label in 2001.
