Biography
Hailing from Chicago, the resourceful indie act Detachment Kit pooled limited funds to lay down their first full-length album, which found a fitting home on New York’s Self-Starter Foundation. Impressed early by the band’s demo, label head Chris Newmyer later oversaw its release as the vinyl EP Attack on Bright America. Any resemblance to fellow Self-Starter act Les Savy Fav proved advantageous, yet echoes of earlier punk outfits such as Wire and Gang of Four supplied a distinctive edge. Their Raging, Quiet Army surfaced in early 2002 and swiftly climbed into the CMJ college radio Top 40. Vocalist and guitarist Ian Menard began performing while still a teenager, joining Caesar’s Glass Box at age 17 in his native Nashville. During art school he connected with guitarist Charlie Davis, drummer Toddrick Spalding, and bassist Josh Hight.
