Biography
The output of Houston native Diana Darby, a singer and songwriter, features music of deceptive delicacy and keen perception that recalls the work of Kendra Smith and Lisa Germano. From childhood she composed both songs and poetry, taking cues from the distinctive phrasing of Bob Dylan together with the seemingly straightforward manner of the Velvet Underground. Alongside multi-instrumentalist Mark Spencer and drummer Will Rigby, she issued her first album, Naked Time, in 2000. She contributed to the 2002 Kris Kristofferson tribute Nothing Left to Lose, then supplied tracks to two 2003 compilations: Acuarela Songs, issued by the Spanish label Acuarela, and Eye of the Beholder III, a Tract Records anthology produced in a limited run of 500 copies.
She also brought out her second album, Fantasia Ball, adopting a lo-fi, intimate style that incorporated ambient sounds such as her dog barking and the refrigerator humming. Two years afterward she released The Magdalene Laundries, a set of songs loosely drawn from the Irish institution for wayward women. Darby reappeared in 2012 with IV (Intravenous), among her most hushed and hypnotic recordings to date.
