The breezy synth-pop ensemble DIANA from Toronto originated through a partnership between drummer Kieran Adams and saxophonist Joseph Shabason, both established figures in the local music community who first connected during jazz studies at the University of Toronto. Adams later performed with Warm Myth, while Shabason joined Destroyer. After completing a batch of demos during a working retreat in the Canadian countryside, the duo brought in vocalist Carmen Elle, previously with Spiral Beach and Army Girls, to add a sweeter vocal presence to the material. Recording wrapped in July 2012, and following uploads of tracks to SoundCloud, the project secured a deal with Jagjaguwar Records. Before the August 2013 release of their debut album Perpetual Surrender, DIANA incorporated another University of Toronto classmate and Hidden Cameras veteran, Paul Mathew. Minus Mathew, the group issued its follow-up Familiar Touch three years afterward, featuring the singles "Confession" and "Slipping Away."
