Born James Curtis in 1946, singer and songwriter Diego Cortez assumed his artistic name in 1973. Esteemed as a lecturer, professor, and writer, Cortez approaches the music business more as an adventurer than a conventional participant. Videos for the Talking Heads, Nico, and Blondie stand among his directorial credits, while collaborations include performances alongside Philip Glass and Laurie Anderson; he has also advised on art at both Christie's and Sotheby's in New York City. Serving as a consultant for Julian Schnabel's 1996 movie Basquiat marked one of his contributions, followed by his 1998 composition for the DJ Spooky work Stuzzicadenti, which earned widespread praise. The production reached audiences upon its release two years afterward.
