Dillinger Four, the punk outfit from St. Paul, Minnesota, came together in 1994 when guitarist Erik Funk and bassist Patrick Costello assembled the original lineup that also featured guitarist Sloan and drummer Lane Pedersen. That configuration lasted long enough to produce the debut 7" Higher Aspirations: Tempered and Dismantled before Sloan departed for Man Afraid. The addition of ex-Scooby Don't guitarist Bill Morrisette allowed the band to reemerge in 1996 with the EP The Kids Are All Dead. A split single with fellow Twin Cities band the Strike arrived the following year alongside several compilation appearances. In 1999 No Idea issued This Shit is Genius, a compilation drawn from those earlier releases and assorted other sources.

After signing with Hopeless, Dillinger Four released their first full-length album, Midwestern Songs of the Americas, in 1998, followed two years later by Versus God. Worldwide touring ensued, including an initial trip to Japan alongside Green Day. Their third album, Situationist Comedy, appeared on Fat Wreck in the summer of 2002. LSD Records put out First Avenue Live in February 2005, documenting the December 16, 2001 performance at First Avenue in Minneapolis. The year closed with a slot at Gainesville’s fourth annual The Fest, where the band shared bills with Ted Leo, Against Me!, Bouncing Souls, and a reunited Radon. Erik Funk also co-owns the Triple Rock Social Club, the popular Minneapolis bar and music venue.
