Born Diómedes Dionisio Díaz Maestre, the Colombian folklorist Diómedes Díaz counted accordionist and composer Martín Mastre among his uncles. He began performing his original material in the mid-’70s, and “La Negra” soon received its first recording by Jorge Quiroz and Luciano Poveda. Díaz made his recorded debut on the album Herencia Vallenata alongside Nafer Durán, a project that included the track “El Chanchullito.” He next cut Tres Canciones in tandem with Elberto López before forming a partnership with Juan Humberto Rois that yielded La Locura. Following sessions with Nicolás Mendoza (known as Colacho) and Gonzalo Arturo Molina, Díaz reunited with Juan Humberto Rois in 1988 for the album Ganó El Folclor.
