Malmö, Sweden’s Dipper drew from an eclectic set of touchstones that included The Stranglers, The Dead Kennedys and Gang of Four. The five-piece—Joachim Leksell on vocals, Harri Kolari on bass, Patrik Malmros on drums, and guitarists Magnus and Karlsson—first assembled in 1994, quickly tiring of the disco pop and black metal dominating their local circuit. Their response was a lean, three-chord strain of punk-rock abrasion, which Vibrafon Records introduced to the public with the 1996 single “Butterfinger.” One year later the label followed with the Instant Kamera and Instant Man EPs, after which the group maintained an extensive run of dates across Sweden and the rest of Europe that continued through 1998.
