Born in Indiana, singer-songwriter Dirk Hamilton delivers performances marked by a raspy tenor, rock and roll drive, biting humor, and sharp attention to life’s odd details. Relocating from his home state to Los Angeles brought him to the attention of Steely Dan producer Gary Katz, who arranged a contract with ABC Records. Katz also helmed Hamilton’s 1976 debut, the acoustic-leaning You Can Sing on the Left or Bark on the Right. That album set itself apart artistically, though not commercially, from other 1970s singer-songwriters through its candid, perceptive tone and singular quirkiness. Follow-up releases Alias I in 1977 and Meet Me at the Crux in 1978 moved the songs even farther from mainstream expectations, attracting strong reviews yet little sales traction. Lyrically elusive in category, Hamilton’s music shared more ground with Van Morrison than with most peers of the decade. Early work lacked Morrison’s sense of direction and hook-writing skill, but Meet Me at the Crux displayed clearer focus and has been viewed by many as a minor classic. Five years of critical regard that never produced sales left Hamilton disillusioned; after issuing Thug of Love in 1979 he exited the business and began counseling emotionally disturbed adolescents in California. Years later, casual appearances with a Stockton, California cover band sparked new songwriting, resulting in the self-produced cassettes Rough Takes (Rough Times) in 1986 and Big at the Blackwater in 1989. Full-time return came with three Appaloosa Records albums on the Italian label—Too Tired to Sleep in 1990, Go Down Swingin’ in 1991, and Yep! in 1993—plus the 1996 Core Records release Sufferupachuckle, each confirming his singular voice remained undiminished. Core’s bankruptcy shortly afterward left him without a U.S. label. In the meantime an unofficial live recording, The Road, the Light, the Night . . . appeared in 1998, followed by Orphans in 2000, a set of 1980s demos. January 2001 saw the arrival of SEXspringEVERYTHING, his first collection of new material in five years.
