Biography
Emerging from Hamburg during the early 1990s, the acid-jazz ensemble disJam steadily redirected its instrumental focus toward listeners attuned to electronica and trip-hop. Keyboardist Ralf Petter, bassist Sascha Panknin, percussionist Oliver Schumacher, guitarist Volker Kurnoth, and reed player Ole Janssen formed the core of the collective, which quickly gained traction across the continental acid-jazz circuit. The group committed its self-titled debut to tape in 1995, securing U.S. release via Instinct’s This Is Acid Jazz imprint. As the emphasis shifted toward electronic textures and dance-jazz hybrids, the lineup steadily pared down its roster of live players while cutting three albums for Yo Mama, frequently augmented by guest vocalists; one such project, the 1996 release Phuturing the Poetry of Lemn Sissay, paired the band with the Manchester poet. By 1998 the remaining trio of Panknin, Petter, and Schumacher had added Christoph Kähler on occasional vocals and guitar, inked a deal with Shadow Records, and issued Return of the Manchurian. American distribution followed once more when the reconfigured unit resurfaced in 2000 with Hybrid Honey.
