Hailing from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Divinity operates as a technically proficient melodic death metal band. Founding members vocalist Sean Jenkins and guitarist James Duncan first connected through jamming sessions in their high-school period and delivered their initial performance at a local battle of the bands contest. Several years after drummer Brett Duncan entered the group, Divinity issued the 2002 EP Intensify, after which second guitarist Sacha Laskow and bassist Nick Foster were incorporated to finalize the touring configuration. Prolonged rehearsal periods ensued, enabling the band to develop a body of highly complex material by 2007 that at times recalled Dark Tranquillity, Dream Theater, and Into Eternity, though without the screeching, and refine it into their debut self-released full-length Allegory, which Nuclear Blast reissued one year afterward.
