In 2001 the Santa Cruz indie rock outfit Division Day came together as an eclectic unit. That same summer, before the group had performed even once in public, its members—singer-keyboardist Rohner Segnitz, guitarist Ryan Wilson, bassist Seb Bailey, and drummer Kevin Lenhart—laid down their self-titled debut EP. The quartet blended Broadcast’s and Boards of Canada’s cool electronic atmosphere with the lysergic dream-pop approach associated with Grandaddy and the Flaming Lips, adding a touch of post-rock drive from the rhythm section; this hybrid was further honed on the more visible follow-up EP The Mean Way In, overseen by the busy Scott Solter, who also records under his own name and had by then joined the Mountain Goats. Once that EP appeared, the musicians paused their activities for several years to focus on university studies, only regrouping in Los Angeles during 2006. Their first album, Beartrap Island, was once more produced by Solter and issued by Eenie Meenie in October 2007.
