In Nottingham, England, DiY originated in 1989 when a loose collective of DJs—including DK, Jack, Pezz, Digs & Whoosh, Emma & Pip, and DJ Dick and Pip—began staging large events in empty warehouses and rural spots. The initiative arose directly from legislation and venue rules that had eroded the core values of dance music culture. Once the rave movement surfaced from its hidden beginnings and drew broader interest, the group launched Strictly 4 Groovers as its own outlet for recordings. A subsequent deal with Warp then produced several singles plus one album.
