Dizzy Eyes emerged in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 2010 as a trio whose brassy, reverb-soaked indie pop layered jangly guitars and oversized hooks while nodding to Black Tambourine, the Jesus and Mary Chain, and 1960s girl-group and bubblegum sounds. Bassist/vocalist Marissa Johnson (No Kids, Weathered Pines), guitarist/vocalist Alejandro Constanzo (formerly of Los Malos), and drummer Jordan Gervais (Hawaiian Bibles) quickly secured a deal with Hardly Art on the strength of their live shows. Constanzo’s residency application setbacks soon required his return to his native Mexico, mere months before the band’s first Hardly Art single could appear, so the group entered hiatus even as Constanzo and Johnson kept writing new material over Skype. Their debut 7" single, Let’s Break Up the Band, reached stores in spring 2011—an ironic title given the circumstances—yet Dizzy Eyes surfaced again with the track Desert Gumdrop Kiss, posted on Bandcamp at the same moment, and also played that year’s SXSW festival.
