An icon in the Baltimore, MD, club scene, DJ Feelgood—also known as Charles Feelgood—fused disco, funk, and Latin influences into his sets, earning swift acclaim as one of electronica’s standout turntable craftsmen. Born Charles Fields, he absorbed funk and disco through the records his father played constantly. In the late ’80s he began staging dance parties under the name House of Fields. Joining forces with fellow DJ Scott Henry in 1992, he co-created the celebrated Fever raves in Baltimore, which introduced house and techno to the region. The events ran biweekly until 2001 and drew such notable guests as Paul Van Dyk and Carl Cox. Fever elevated the local underground dance community to national visibility and accelerated Feelgood’s broader recognition. His Time to Get Ill mix-tape series further strengthened his standing inside the rave scene. He launched Charm City Records in 1993 and issued several albums on the imprint. Baltimore City Paper readers voted him Best DJ in 1996. Two years later he formed the duo Partners in Crime with producer Nardy Teal; the pair remixed tracks for outside artists while creating original material of their own. After signing with Moonshine Records, Feelgood delivered his label debut, Can You Feel It, in 2000. Observers often describe him as one of America’s most tireless DJs, regularly appearing at premier dance clubs nationwide.
