Biography
In contrast to Detroit figures such as DJ Assault and DJ Godfather, who focused on ghetto tech, the Chicago icon DJ Funk carved out his niche in ghetto house. His initial breakthrough came during the late '90s through multiple EP releases on the prolific Dancemania label. Concurrently, he toured the Midwest as a DJ, favoring pitched-up dance tracks with pornographic themes. Recognition came equally from his distinctive mixing style and his track choices, as he seldom allowed selections to run beyond two or three minutes. Numerous DJ Funk mix tapes circulated throughout the Midwest, supplemented by a handful of independently issued mix CDs. Yet his acclaim remained largely limited to the Detroit/Chicago corridor and the Midwest rave circuit. In distinction from Detroit's booty artists, DJ Funk lacked a dedicated local scene and stood out as an outlier. Consequently, observers often regarded him as a novelty act. He persisted nonetheless in DJing and production work, launching the Funk Records label before advancing to more prominent, nationally distributed mix albums such as Booty House Anthems (1999).
