Biography
Wendell Fite, professionally known as DJ Hurricane and counted among New York City's leading turntablists, developed his technique in Hollis, Queens, alongside Run-D.M.C. His career later aligned with the Beastie Boys, where he served as their exclusive DJ and built his profile before issuing independent projects. Having started to rhyme at age eleven, he first assembled the Solo Sounds and afterward the Afros. While working as a bodyguard for Run-D.M.C. on the 1986 Raising Hell tour, he formed a friendship with the Beastie Boys, the tour's opening act, which led to their invitation for him to join as their dedicated DJ. As the Beastie Boys advanced through successive 1990s albums, Hurricane shared the visibility by releasing his debut solo album, The Hurra, on Grand Royal in 1995. Following his departure from the group after their 1998 album Ill Communication, he returned in late 2000 with Don't Sleep, an effort that demonstrated greater conceptual cohesion and featured a wide range of guest artists.
