Biography
DJ Magic Mike stood out as the pivotal bass producer who followed 2 Live Crew and ranked as the genre’s most essential recording figure. Functioning as an underground label impresario comparable to Master P, he generated tracks far rougher than the polished Miami bass aesthetic and maintained a raw old-school approach more reminiscent of Ultramagnetic MC’s than Luther Campbell well after most hip-hop producers shifted toward pop material in the late ’90s.
Born Michael Hampton, he launched his mixing work before reaching his teens by performing at a roller rink and distributing mixtapes. At fourteen he already hosted a drive-time radio program in his hometown of Orlando. Following high-school graduation he turned his focus to club performances and made his recording debut with the 1987 single “Boot the Booty” on Vision Records.
In 1988 local promoter Tom Reich proposed that DJ Magic Mike acquire a half-share in Cheetah Records provided his records performed strongly. The initial singles issued under that arrangement, “Magic Mike Cutz the Record” and “Drop the Bass,” achieved substantial regional success and prompted the 1989 release of his first album, DJ Magic Mike and the Royal Posse. He assumed greater control of his own instrumental productions on the next project, 1990’s Bass Is the Name of the Game, which attained gold status even with limited vocal presence. His breakthrough album, Ain’t No Doubt About It, arrived in 1992; later that March he issued two albums on the same day, Bass: The Final Frontier and This Is How It Should Be Done, both of which entered the charts, the former also reaching gold. Although he sustained a steady recording pace through the mid-’90s and accumulated double-digit full-length releases, fewer of those albums appeared on the charts. He offset the commercial shortfall through advertising campaigns for Coca-Cola and Pioneer while also collaborating with Sir Mix-a-Lot, 2 Live Crew, MC Shy D, and Poison Clan. In the new millennium he delivered Magic’s Kingdom and sustained his series of mix albums.
