Leveraging the worldwide popularity of Korean pop, Brazilian enthusiast DJ Masa produced an array of mixes and mashups that reached listeners everywhere. Born Carlos Henrique Brandão in Belem, Para, Brazil, the artist known as DJ Masa (aka Masa, Mas4, or Masamune Carlos) began posting his K-pop mashups online in 2005. His first efforts centered on Boa before he expanded to rework material from every major South Korean act, later extending his work to Japanese and Taiwanese performers as well. During 2006 he launched a blog that served as a platform for his tracks, among them the widely followed year-end compilations of K-pop hits. On releases such as the K-Bootie series, these creations blended K-pop tracks with Western material from acts including Muse, Nirvana, Lady Gaga, and Madonna.
