Chilean-born Leopoldo Méndez relocated to Stockholm, Sweden, during 1986. Growing up in a modest household that fought for improved prospects, he occasionally landed in difficulties while roaming the immigrant neighborhoods. His path into music began after he entered the counseling program Fasta, where an encounter with sound engineer Jordi Fuste prompted DJ Méndez to launch a Latin rap career highlighted by an initial stage appearance at a neighborhood festival. Blending hip-hop with longstanding Latin American musical traditions secured him a recording contract, after which his debut single “Chiki-Chiki” propelled him onto the charts across Sweden, Norway, Scandinavia, Denmark, Finland, and Russia; the track appeared on his first album, Latino for Life. March 2001 found DJ Méndez returning to his homeland for an effective promotional visit.
